Quetta, Pakistan – On October 16, 2024, the Kathleen Kamal Raisani Foundation (KKRF), in partnership with The Smaaj and with support from the Women Development Department, organized a significant awareness event at the Women Technical Training Center, Quetta. The event marked both World Handwashing Day and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with a focus on empowering young women and staff with essential health education.

Dr. Rubaba Khan Buledi, Advisor to the Chief Minister of Balochistan for the Women Development Department, honored the event as the chief guest. Dr. Buledi addressed the audience on the importance of hand hygiene as a primary measure to prevent infections, especially for students in close-contact environments. She reiterated that practices as simple as regular handwashing can significantly reduce the risk of respiratory and diarrheal diseases, making it a critical public health initiative.

In observance of World Handwashing Day, hygiene kits were distributed among students and staff, each containing essential hygiene supplies to encourage regular and proper handwashing practices. Educational materials (IEC materials) on hygiene and disease prevention were also shared with attendees to support sustained learning and awareness. The session included refreshments for all participants, creating a welcoming environment for health education.

The event further highlighted Pink October, the global month dedicated to breast cancer awareness. A detailed presentation was delivered by Dr. Rozina Sattar, an expert in oncology, who provided in-depth information about breast cancer risk factors, early signs, and the significance of early detection. Her presentation emphasized self-examination techniques and encouraged regular health check-ups, equipping students and staff with the knowledge to take proactive steps for their health.

This dual-themed event organized by KKRF, in collaboration with The Smaaj and supported by the Women Development Department, reflects a comprehensive approach to community health. By combining critical hygiene education with breast cancer awareness, the initiative aimed to address prevalent health concerns and empower women to make informed decisions about their health.

The participants left the event with increased knowledge and essential tools to incorporate these health practices into their daily lives. KKRF, along with its partners, remains committed to promoting public health and well-being across Balochistan through continued education and community engagement.
